Advancement for Scout through Life Ranks

Troop 869 Advancement Procedures from Scout to Life Rank

Preparation for the Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review

When you have completed all of the rank requirements, bring your Scout Handbook to the Advancement Coordinator, who will record your accomplishments in the computer.  The Advancement Coordinator will fill out and sign a Request for Scoutmaster’s Conference and Board of Review form for you.

You will next see the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL).  The SPL will review your scout handbook to confirm that you have met the requirements necessary for the rank and may ask you some review questions.  The SPL will then sign the Request for Scoutmaster’s Conference and Board of Review form.

For the Scoutmaster’s Conference and Board of Review:

  1. Wear the full Scout uniform: scout pants, shirt, belt, socks, close toed shoes, neckerchief with slide, and sash.
  2.  Be prepared to recite the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Slogan and Scout Motto.
  3. Bring your Scout Handbook and the Request for Scoutmaster’s Conference and Board of Review form.

Scout through Life Rank Scoutmaster’s Conference

  1. Sign in at the table for a Scoutmaster’s Conference when you first get to the meeting.  The Scoutmaster will use this list to call you out of the meeting.
  2. The Scoutmaster will call you out of the meeting and conduct the Scoutmaster’s Conference.  The Scoutmaster will sign Request for Scoutmaster’s Conference and Board of Review form when the Scoutmaster’s Conference is concluded.

Tenderfoot through Life Rank Board of Review

  1. A Board of Review is not required for the Scout Rank.
  2. Call the Board of Review Coordinator to request a Board of Review.  A Board of Review (BOR) should not be conducted the same day as the Scoutmaster Conference, but can be done the following week.  The request for a BOR must be made no later than Sunday for the next Troop meeting.  You must telephone the BOR Coordinator (do not e-mail).  If you get an answering machine, leave a detailed message asking for a BOR and give your full name and telephone number.  The BOR Coordinator will call you back.  If you don’t hear back by Sunday evening, call again.  You need to speak with the BOR Coordinator in person to confirm the date that the BOR will be held.
  3. During the Troop meeting, the BOR Coordinator will call you out of the meeting for the BOR in the order of request.  A BOR is conducted by 3-6 adults. The Board will review your achievements and ask questions about your scouting experience.  Then you will be asked to step out of the room so the Board can discuss your case.  The Board will call you back into the room and give you the decision; in most cases, this will be congratulations on achieving the rank desired.
